Yes! Although the Cosmos haven’t fielded a team in recent years, the club never ceased to exist. In fact, the organization now based in Paterson can trace its lineage directly to the team that was launched in 1971 and signed Pelé four years later. Mediacom founder Rocco Commisso, who took over in 2017, was the most recent owner responsible for maintaining the Cosmos’ brand, property and heritage. He sold a majority share in the club to North Jersey Pro Soccer in 2025.
NJPS and the Cosmos men’s and women’s teams are majority owned by Baye Adofo-Wilson, a Paterson native and US Army Veteran who’s spent his career serving North Jersey as a developer and urban planner, an attorney, a board member at several foundations, and Deputy Mayor of Newark (2014-17). Mr. Adofo-Wilson is joined on the Cosmos board by investors Giuseppe Rossi and Sapna Shah.
The Cosmos’ head of soccer is North Jersey’s own Giuseppe Rossi, who progressed from the youth pitches of Passaic County to a distinguished professional career highlighted by star turns at Villarreal and Fiorentina, as well as 30 appearances with the Italian national team. Rossi retired as a player in 2023. His considerable experience and vast network make him the ideal person to identify and shepherd talent through the Cosmos’ system.
Rossi will appoint additional technical staff, including a men’s head coach, in the coming months.
The Cosmos men’s and women’s teams are proud to play in Paterson at venerable Hinchliffe Stadium, a former Negro League baseball venue that was renovated and refurbished in 2021-23. Hinchliffe now seats 7,800 and is in an ideal setting: adjacent to the spectacular Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, a short walk from downtown Paterson and about a mile from NJ Transit.
The Cosmos men will kick off in spring 2026, and the professional women’s team will begin play in the coming years. More details regarding the women’s side will be available soon.
The Cosmos are accepting membership deposits beginning July 11. You can learn more about club membership plans, prices and amenities here.
The Cosmos men have joined USL League One, a nationwide circuit of 14 independent clubs operated by the United Soccer League that’s expected to add five teams in 2026. Launched in 2019, League One sits just below the USL Championship on the USL pyramid and is sanctioned as a third division league by U.S. Soccer. The USL has announced its intention to add a first division league and implement promotion and relegation in 2028.
Plans for the Cosmos women are still being finalized and will be announced soon.
Yes. The Cosmos men will compete in both the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the USL Jägermeister Cup each season.
The U.S. Open Cup is American soccer’s national championship tournament and an indispensable part of the sport’s domestic culture and history. Launched in 1913, the Open Cup has an inclusive and accessible format that aligns with the Cosmos’ core values. The Cosmos reached the Open Cup’s round-of-16 in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and eliminated a neighboring Major League Soccer side in each of those three seasons.
The USL Jägermeister Cup is a season-long league cup tournament featuring every club from the USL Championship and League One. It launched in 2024.
The Cosmos intend to build on a decorated history, as their eight league championships are the most among active American clubs. The Cosmos won the NASL Soccer Bowl in 1972, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1982. Following a hiatus, the Cosmos then won the second iteration of the NASL in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
The Cosmos captured the Trans-Atlantic Challenge Cup in 1980, 1983 and 1984. The TACC was a four-team tournament featuring one or two NASL qualifiers and additional clubs from Europe or South America. In addition, the Cosmos’ reserve team won the National Premier Soccer League title in 2015.

Yes. The club is planning to host several tryouts beginning in fall 2025. More information will be announced before the end of summer 2025.
Player identification and development will be the cornerstone of the Cosmos’ new era. On the youth level, the club intends to partner with multiple local academies. On the professional level, the Cosmos will pay training compensation to academies eligible for payments in line with established FIFA standards.
We hope so! The Cosmos believe that the most authentic and passionate fan support is internally organized, independent and organic. We’d love to see Cosmos fans unite to generate a colorful and inspiring atmosphere at Hinchliffe Stadium. The club stands ready to work with supporters on tickets, logistics and other needs.
